Scientific Research Paper

Next Steps
Research
- Begin by asking a testable, measurable scientific question.
- You must research your topic.
- For example, if my paper is about moldy bread, I will research what mold is, how mold is formed, etc.
- Use reliable sites when conducting your research.
- Write a one page paper discussing the SCIENCE behind the question you are trying to answer.
- DO NOT write about the experiment you will conduct, your hypothesis, or what you think will happen.
Formatting
- One page, typed minimum
- Use correct MLA heading and formatting
- One inch margins
- 12-point font
- The title of your paper should be the research question you are using
- Include a works cited page with at least two credible, properly documented websites.
- Absolutely NO first person!!
Next Steps
- When you are ready to start your project, this research will help you write an informed hypothesis.
- Fix any errors that were documented on your research paper
- Attach this paper to your finished science fair project
Science Fair Hints and Tips!
Topic
Research Question
Hypothesis
Procedure
Variables
Data
Research Paper
Conclusion
Organization
Topic
- Choose a creative topic
- Use multiple resources
- No repeats
- Avoid: comparisons that ask for opinions, too difficult to complete, too dangerous, too obvious
- Choose a creative, catchy title (alliteration, puns, play on words)
Research Question
- Must begin with a question word and end with a question mark
- Must be scientifically testable (can you collect data about it)
Hypothesis
- Use an If…then…because… statement
- DO NOT use I think!!!
- Should be an educated, research-based guess
Procedure
- Details
- Be specific, even if it seems obvious
- List steps that you completed in order
- It is ok to disprove your hypothesis
Variables
- Be sure to list the variables, as we have practiced in class
- You must have an independent variable that you are changing and a dependent variable you are measuring
- Be specific (name the factors you are testing)
Data
- This includes graphs, charts, data tables, and pictures
- Must include one graph, with a title, a labeled x and y axis (use your notebook for guidelines)
- Must include one data table
- Graphs and data tables must be computer generated
- Data table and graphs are not the same thing
- Try to include at least one picture
Research Paper
- Include the research paper you wrote before your experiment
- Make any necessary adjustments and corrections
Conclusion
- Must be ½ to 1 page long
- Tells us what happened in your experiment
- Answer your research question
- Summarize the hypothesis
- SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE to show why your hypothesis is true or not
- Sums up the charts and graphs
- Explain results/data
- Did your data match your research? Analyze why or why not
Organization
- Colored boards look the best
- Use large printed or cut out letters
- Use rulers/straight lines
- Order things on board in a way that makes sense (ex-conclusion at end)
- Avoid using I
- Budget your time wisely-do a little at a time
